Hey future Engineers! Welcome to the first ever episode of my blog. “How to be a Great Civil Engineering Student”. I am Rhejina and I am a freshman student of FEU Institute of Technology taking up the course of Civil Engineering.
Civil Engineering is concerned with managing of building, planning, and execution of the designs form site development, environmental, structural and geotechnical engineers.
Staying up almost one year in this career I found here very challenging, so as we all know being an Engineering student is not a joke. Once you enter you need to hold on it, you should already know the fact that you need to accept the things that might happened during studying the course. There is no thing that is easy to achieve. It is literally burning your eyebrows and breaking your leg. As a freshmen student I already experienced a lot of hardships. I know most of students can really relate in this, taking up many Mathematics subjects such as Calculus, Algebra, Trigonometry, Math 1, Math 2 and so on and so forth, but not only that there’s also the different branches of science, such as Chemistry and Physics. These subjects are really the hardest one, even a highschool students knows that fact. During your life in college you need to embrace to all of this, because this is the life that you chose to be. So in this blog, as a student I am going to give you some of the tips that I do to become a better student and future engineer.
Tip number one, know your desired profession what made you decideto study engineering many of student during college have often trouble choosing what college course to take, because it must be a tough decision, don’t let yourself to stuck with the course you are not particularly interested in. Also, don’t let other to choose for your, your own decision is the most important at all.
Tip number two, use your previous knowledge, that why during high school you need to take that time seriously because everything that you’ve learned during high-school will be apply during college, they are stages, and now you reach the highest stage of studying.
Tip number three, dedicate your time in studying, college is a serious matter, sometimes you need to take the risk on the thing that is important to you, you need to set aside the least important, instead prioritize your studies.
Tip number four, make a schedule of the task, you need to have your time management table, list all the important task that you need over the day/week. Like for example write all the stuffs/subjects that you need to study with a specific time of studying, this will help you to use your time in a productive way, this will also help you to be an organized person, by these you can balance the task that you will be doing during the day.
Tip number five, take down notes during discussion write down all the information that the professor write on the board. having notes will allow you to quick access to your most-used formulas. This will also be serve as your reviewer and handouts for the following exams and quizzes.
Tip number six, pass your outputs on time you need to pass your assignment, project and seatwork on time for you to get a high score, some professor gives credits for those who can pass their output earlier or on time. In that way you can gain points that can be added for your whole grade.
Tip number seven, do advance reading, study first the lesson you find difficulty the ability to read well increases the freedom and self-determination of the individual. When you do an advance reading you can cope easily for the next lesson of your professor, you can work together with the lessons. Another thing is you need to prioritize the lessons that you find hard, do some research on that specific topic and make some understanding and analyzation.
Tip number eight, get to know your professors, knowing your professor will help you to feel comfortable approaching them and ask question to them. Because sometimes students are afraid to ask question that why they cannot really understand the lessons. Your professor will be the one who will help you to pass in every subjects you need to cooperate and rely on them.
Tip number nine, work in team as much as you can, forming group study provides encouragement in the face of frustration, if you find the topic hard you can ask the group and share different thoughts and knowledge, the skills you develop in studying will help prepare to lead teams after graduate.
Tip number ten, find your flaws and fix them, take heart and perseverance, Civil engineering is a difficult course for everyone who dream for it, everyone of us struggles, but the only key is to accept your mistakes and learn to it, if you failed that accept, get up and try again. Everything happens for a reason, we need to accept things in different way,we also need to accept feedback from other people, when you already had a feedback you can work to improve you skills. We just need to love our passion and take perseverance. That’s absolutely necessary for your future career.
Those tips that I give you is really effective since I am also doing all of these. When you do these guidelines you surely be a good student and a good engineer in the future. We will have a hard time but we will have a good life in the future. Always remember that in every task that we do, we should not forget to rest and take a break. Do something that make you feel happy and comfortable. Never pressure yourself instead do your best in all the activities and enjoy it. When we love your passion it will be definitely be easy for us, just like in studying if you love your course you will surely enjoy and love it despite the difficulties. Every one of us will be successful in the near future, always remember the three words study, study, study
